Named after the famous Dick Whittington, the Whittington Hospital is a district general and teaching hospital of UCL Medical School and Middlesex University School of Health and Social Sciences. Located in Upper Holloway, it is managed by Whittington Health NHS Trust, operating as Whittington Health, an integrated care organisation providing hospital and community health services.
As part of recent regeneration work, Whittington Hospital has brought forward a new mental health facility – providing 78 inpatient beds over four floors of accommodation.
The challenge outlined within this project surrounded the concept of ‘facing up’ the large diameter secant piled wall in the basement, before installing a traditional waterproofing membrane… which transpired as an expensive process. It required the creation of a smooth surface across the front of the piles, using shortcrete or similar methods.
This process necessitated hiring a specialist subcontractor, which added additional costs and extended the project timeline considerably. Consequently, the client sought alternative solutions, which led to the onboarding of Premcrete.
The Solution
Premcrete’s super flexible Maxiprufe Plus was the chosen solution. This pre-applied waterproof only membrane eliminated the need to smooth the piles. Instead, the membrane could be applied directly over the contours of the piles due to its flexibility.
Maxiprufe Plus, along with other membranes in our product range, incorporates our unique APAN technology, which features a polymer-impregnated self-healing fleece, offering significant advantages over traditional bentonite membranes. It is lightweight, offers 100sqm coverage per roll, compared to the 5sqm per roll commonly found in traditional options.
