Wickside

The Challenge

Wickside is the latest canal-side neighbourhood to occupy London’s historic Hackney area. Located in East London, Wickside will see the creation of around 500 homes as well as a selection of shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. Reflecting the area’s historical and artistic status, the site will also be home to creative studios, an art gallery and, as a nod to Hackney Wick’s industrial past, a large brewery.

It was discovered that, upon closer initial inspection, several challenges existed on site; specifically surrounding the secant piled wall. This was in poor condition, making it unsuitable for an effective application of the Hydroprufe LG – a liquid-applied waterproof and gas protection membrane. The client needed a solution to address this issue… and quickly.

The Solution

Premcrete were selected to lead the structural waterproofing design on this project. Working together with the structural engineer, Premcrete suggested casting a concrete fillet atop the pile heads, which were in a deteriorated state. This approach created a smooth, level surface suitable for the membrane application. The benefits of this were threefold, helping to save valuable time, enhanced efficiency and, ultimately, a smoother project timeline.

Additionally, it provided a uniform surface on the underside of the capping beam, allowing for a seamless termination of the membrane at the top of the piled wall.
